Children of Alcoholics Week- February 14-20, 2010

Often the people hurt most by alcohol abuse and alcoholism don’t even drink; they are the children of alcoholic parents. These children are more likely to experience mental and physical problems and are at a greater risk of being neglected and/or abused. Children of Alcoholics Week is celebrated internationally each year during the week in which Valentine’s Day falls.

Facts:

Children of alcoholics are two to four times more likely than other children to become addicted to alcohol themselves.

One in four youth under age 18 lives in a family where a person abuses alcohol or suffers from alcoholism. Countless others are affected by a family member’s use of drugs.

Addiction to alcohol or drugs is a disease.  When one member of the family has the disease, all family members are affected by it.

Remember the Seven Cs

You didn’t Cause it

You can’t Cure it

You can’t Control it

You can take better Care of yourself

By Communicating your feelings,

Making healthy Choices,

And Celebrating yourself.

You can’t get addicted if you don’t drink or use drugs.  There is help available for those suffering from the effects of someone else’s alcohol abuse.  Alateen meetings are available in many areas. For a meeting in your area, call 1-888-425-2666. For younger children, talking to a trusted adult is helpful and some support groups for younger children are available. For more information contact the National Association for Children of Alcoholics at http://www.nacoa.org or Substance Abuse Services for Clayton County, Inc. at 563-245-1546.
